Ghana as a country used to hold standup comedy high from the early days of Keysoap concert party sponsored by the then Lever Brothers and held at the Nation theater. It bred a lot of great talents such as Bob Okala, Nkomode, Bod Santo all of blessed memory, Judas, Asaseaban, Agya Koo and the list goes on and on.

This was greatly attended and involved prominent people in this country till it gradually lost it’s touch. So it was great news to read from Showbiz newspaper that the former 1st Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings says Dkb is a boring comedian. At least, we got the attention again.

Years gone by and Nigerian standup comedy took over when charterhouse introduced a night of 1000laughs and most of the comedy acts were Nigerians. Gradually, the father of the new age comedy in Ghana Mr. Kwaku Sintim- Misa(KSM) started satire comedy with the very known ‘Efia Srebo)’ show which was the most attended comedy show in Ghana. Some Ghanaians like the David Oscars & the Koo OForis also tried to march up on charterhouse(stages) events. Later David Oscar, Dkb, Funny Face, Foster Romanus, James brown pushed a new face of standup comedy in Ghana which was a struggle because there was a strong negative misconception that Ghanaian comedians are not funny which has been proven wrong.

Later along the line, it has been embraced by many Ghanaians including charterhouse & other event organizers to include our own: Dkb, Foster Romanus, Ob Amponsah, Nino, James Brown, Lekzy Decomic, Khemikal, David Aglah, Tee Kay, Jacinta and a whole lot more who will crack your ribs on stage. Comedy shows like Friday corporate comedy which used to be at Citizen Kofi, Comedyexpress, Laughline, Lypo, Laughkitchen, Corporate comedy and others are getting Ghana standup comedy better year by year. Recently, some of our finest comedians Dkb, Lekzy Decomic, Khemikal and the only female comedian Jacinta rocked shoulders with great comedians like Salvador from Uganda and Accapella from Nigeria at LORD OF THE RIBS comedy show.

Standup comedy has risen again and we are greatful for the support and observation. It will make us better because you will continue to be at the shows and rally behind us. We also need support from all media houses and bloggers to make this industry great.
